Food, clothing and a warm, friendly apartment welcome family to U.S.
DENVER, July 7, 2005 – LogistiCare is proud to announce that its Colorado operations staff recently completed the “adoption” of a family of political refugees from Uzbekistan. A family of three, the mother first sought asylum in Russia. Now, she and her two daughters are settling into their new life in the United States, thanks to the efforts of the LogistiCare team in partnership with Lutheran Family Services.
LogistiCare employees collected furniture, bedding, kitchen and bathroom supplies and bought food and other necessary items that were not donated. LogistiCare employees also helped ease the transition by putting dishes in cupboards, fixing appliances, putting up shower curtains and placing a welcome mat at the front door. A hot, home-cooked meal was prepared for their arrival.
"We are extremely pleased to be part of a community outreach effort like this,” said Bethany Baker, healthcare manager for LogistiCare. “We picked up the family at the airport, helped them settle into their new home and are continuing to help them learn to function in western society.
“We will be helping with things that most of us take for granted, like how to use a microwave, a dishwasher, a washing machine and even a pay phone. We may help mom: find a job, utilize medical transportation, shop for groceries and prepare a budget. We already have taken them to one medical appointment and have another scheduled. Getting all of their immunizations up-to-date will be important so that we can get the children into school.”
Born in Uzbekistan, the mother fled in 1989. She does not speak English, but has experience as a nurse. Her two daughters are 12 and 9 years old. They have learned some English in school. The family came to America with only personal belongings they could carry.
“This is a commitment we are making to welcome the family by providing assistance with cultural adjustment and resettlement,” said Steven Feist, Colorado operations director for LogistiCare. “It is not a matter of financial commitment as much as it is a commitment of time and energy that we hope will create life-changing friendships and a greater understanding of people whose lives have been uprooted. We will provide whatever support we can to help ease the transition.”
Through its many community outreach programs, LogistiCare is committed to being part of and giving back to communities in all areas in which it does business.
