ATLANTA, Nov. 22, 2004 – LogistiCare is proud to announce that it is a Founding Partner of Virginia’s new Rx Partnership program (RxP), a one-of-a-kind effort intended to increase access to free prescription medications for uninsured citizens of Virginia.
Billed as an innovative public/private partnership, RxP will solicit free medications in bulk from pharmaceutical companies and arrange for distribution directly to non-profit, licensed affiliate pharmacies which it credentials and monitors. These pharmacies are typically operated by free clinics and community health centers all across Virginia.
“It is an honor to offer support to such a worthy program,” said John Shermyen, president and chief executive officer of LogistiCare. “The problem of the uninsured is a national issue, and I commend Virginia and fellow partners for taking a positive step toward helping uninsured individuals. It’s through programs like this that we can start to make a difference in solving this problem.”
“As a Virginian, I am particularly proud that our company is stepping up to help the uninsured in this state,” said Freda Smith, Virginia operations director for LogistiCare. “Part of our company mission is to give back to the communities in which we operate, so contributing to a program that will help the uninsured get access to necessary medications is a wonderful thing.”
More than 1 million Virginians do not have health insurance. And, more than one in four Virginians do not take prescribed medications, because they cannot afford to buy them.
Along with LogistiCare, a few of the other Founding Partners include, the Commonwealth of Virginia, Virginia Healthcare Foundation, Virginia Primary Care Association, Virginia Association of Free Clinics, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and AstraZeneca.
A news conference was held today at the Virginia Capitol to officially launch this unique program.
